    Club Locarno have partnered with Windsure Adventure Watersports to offer introductory to Windsurfing lessons at Jericho Sailing Centre as 'buy 1 get 1 free'.

    Club Locarno member must have completed these courses, or equivalent, to be eligible to access the Windsurfing fleet.

    Two 3-hour sessions:

    • Discover Windsurfing I - $145
    • Discover Windsurfing II - FREE*

    * Discovery Windsurfing II is free subject to paying and completing Discover Windsurfing I.

    Prices are per person, before tax and booking fee. You first signup with this registration form to access the coupon code for this special offer.

    When:

    Content:

    You will receive both on land and on water instruction. Skills taught include understanding the wind (points of sail), how to launch and land safely, basic maneuvers (tack) and how to self rescue. You will also be taught the correct handling of the gear including how to safely carry, clean and store the boards and sails.

    All windsurf equipment provided as well as personal flotation device (PFD) and wetsuit.

    Conditions:

    1. You must be a Club Locarno Windsurfing member to access the coupon code.
    2. You must also be a Jericho Sailing Centre member 

    Registration Process:

    1. Complete the Club Locarno Registration form. You will receive an email with a coupon code.

    After the lessons

    After you have completed your lessons you must do a Level 1 checkout so we can show you the gear checkout procedures. You can contact the windsurfing director or a fleet captain to see if this can be scheduled on one of your lesson days. We want to get you out on the water as soon as possible. :-)

    • Discover Wing Surfing 3.5-hour professional training
    • Discover Wing Foiling 3-hour professional training

    When:

    • March & April - call Windsure for possible early season lesson options.
    • May 1st to September 30th, most days (weekdays & weekends), per Windsure's schedule and availability.

    Content:

    1. Wing-surfing lesson - equipment knowledge, points of wing/wind theory, steering, tacking, water and marine environment safety. You will spend time both on land and on the water.
    2. Wing-foiling lesson - learn how to carry equipment, handle a board, start, pitch and roll management, and self rescue.

    All Wing equipment provided as well as personal flotation device (PFD) and wetsuit.

    Note, due to light winds at Jericho, getting above the water using the wing-foil can be very challenging and may not be feasible during the lesson and may require lots of practice.

    Destination: Hood River, Oregon (aka 'The Gorge')

    The The Columbia River Gorge is one the premium high wind locations in the Pacific North West. The town of Hood River is the epicenter of wind-sport scene in the region and offers great food, coffee and windsurf shopping.

    Due to very high winds and river traffic, this trip is only open to  Level 2 sailors and Level 3 sailors 

    Note:

    This is a trip organized under the away pass system. This means that transport of gear and care of gear is your responsibility. You may be asked to pay for any damage to or loss of gear. For details see here. You do not need to have an off-site pass to join.

    The trip details:

    • Dates are: Friday, June 28th to Monday, July 1st (Canada Day long weekend).
    • Open to Level 2 and 3 windsurf members.
    • You will organize your own accommodation, transport, tents & food etc. (see below)
    • A limited number of foils will be permitted
    • This is a trip organized under the away pass system. This means that transport of gear and care of gear is your responsibility. You may be asked to pay for any damage to or loss of gear. For details see here. You do not need to have an off-site pass to join. 

    Cost:

    • A nominal Club Trip Fee is required for all members who will be using club gear on the trip, but it is waived for those who already have a High Wind Pass.

    Guests & kids:

    • Partners, kids and other guests are welcome.
    • Only windsurf members can use Club Locarno gear

    Conditions/Level:

    • This is a high wind trip open to level 2 and level 3 sailors.
    • Unless supervised by a willing Level 3 sailor, Level 2 sailors shall limit themselves to intermediate sites only (see map) and must sail within their wind limits (<20 knots) and ability.
    • Sailing on the Columbia River which flows east-to-west with wind usually westerly. 
    • The river doesn't have sharks, but it does have working barges that will not stop and which you must stay clear of at all times,
    • There is no rescue service.  
    • Expect temperatures 15C to 25C, and wind speeds of 15 to 25+ knots, averaging in the 20-25 knot range depending on where you launch. Winds in excess of 30 knots are not uncommon.

    Key Dates:

    • 16 June  - Trip registration closes
    • 17 June - Zoom Trip Planning Session (work out transport)
    • Thu, 27/Fri, 28 June  - leave Vancouver (~ 7 hr drive)
    • Mon, 1 July - return to Vancouver
    (Cars can decide to leave/return within a reasonable range of these dates.)

    Accommodation:

    Club Locarno members often camp near Hood River at Tucker Campground. There is here are many motels and AirBnb types accommodation in the area.

    The drive down can be broken up by staying in one of the cheap motels along the I5 interstate. 

    Transportation:

    • Often members share transport
    • Journey time one way is 7hours (not including time taken to cross the border!)
    • Launch spots are along the Columbia Rover gorge and only feasible accessible by car.
    • No car?
      • Modo Carshare have Kia Sedona's with roof racks and large enough to transport four people with sails and boards.
      • Enquire about car pooling
    • In order to transport kit you must have completed a gear transport clinic. If you have not yet done so please ask for help/instruction if you need it. Do not transport gear without experience or prior instruction from a club officer.

    Important (T&Cs)!

    • This is a trip organized under the away pass system -> gear transport and care responsibilities are place on entirely on individuals. Any and all costs due to loss or damage of equipment must be compensated fully to the club.
      • For minor damage the director may let you do the repair yourself.
      • The person that signed out the board for the trip is responsible.
    • You are going across a boarder: Passport is essential, a Nexus card is great.
    • You are assuming all responsibility for your personal safety and other water users. You must sail within you limits, be conscious of changing conditions, be able to stay clear of hazards (e.g. barges and other users) and able to self rescue. 
    • Health insurance - "residents are strongly advised to purchase additional health insurance from a private insurer before leaving the province, whether they are going to another part of Canada or outside the country - even if they plan to be away for only a day…"
    • Registration is limited based on the number and type of boards that are approved for use on the trip.
    • Registration variations can be made for members who own their own gear, are planning to rent gear on-site (e.g., at Hood River's retail/rental shops), or are not planning to windsurf.
    • Guests can accompany members on trips but cannot use club gear.

    Open to L2 & L3 - Windsurfers and Wingers. Limited number of foils will be taken this year.

    Destination: Nitinaht Lake, BC

    This trip is awesome for intermediate and advanced sailors. Beautiful Nitinaht Lake typically has no wind in the morning and high wind at the end of the day. A great opportunity to progress.

    Level 2 sailors can enjoy consistent strong winds to nail water starts, get into harness lines and foot straps and get planing, and get foling. Level 3 will enjoy blasting, bump & jump and lots of runs to perfect their carve gybe.

    The trip details:

    • Dates are: Friday, August 2nd to Monday, August 5th (August long weekend).
    • Open to Level 2 and 3 windsurf members.
    • You will organize your own transport, tents & food etc. (Often members share transport)
    • The club will rent a van to transport most club gear. Ideally some members will also take gear on roof racks.

    Prices & charges:

    • Club arranged camping is $55 per adult (3 nights)
    • Kids under 17 are free (limits apply)
    • Club Locarno gear is an additional trip fee of $35 (members only)

    Guests & kids:

    • Partners, kids and other guests are welcome.
    • Maximum 1 adult guest
    • Maximum 4 kids under 17 years old
    • Members with a guest should try to share a tent so as to keep space available for other members   
    • In the reservation form, DO NOT include kids in the number of guests, instead indicate the number of kids in specific drop-down box.

    Important Notes:

    • Do not register another Locarno windsurf member as a guest - have them register separately.
    • Windsurf members with their own camping arranged are welcome to join and use the club equipment for the $35 fee.
    • The road to Nitinaht includes 45 km of (mostly good) gravel logging road.
    • We will sort out details for tents, sites and transport at the planning meetings.
    • Due to summer demand, book ferries for vehicles ASAP

     Key Dates:

    • Monday, July 15th (7:30 pm): Online planning meeting (early transport, etc.)
    • Monday, July 29th: Final online planning meeting (transport, camping, etc.)

    Participation and volunteering

    The trip is member run. To share the load, members are expected to

    • Help with loading the van & post-trip clean up
    • Rigging and carrying gear
    A rigging and transportation clinic will be organized in July.

    Registration survey:

    Please complete the survey as best as possible to aid trip planning. Planning considerations include windsurf gear, transport and Nitinaht campsite occupancy limits for adults, kids and number of tents. Survey results will be reviewed and reconfirmed at the planning meeting, in case there are changes.

    Addition information:

    • Members can organize their own camping at the Nitinaht Campsite. If there is no availability, check again closer to the time as there are often last minute cancellations.
    • For members taking a vehicle, book a BC Ferry ASAP
    • A U-Haul van is booked for gear transport and is on the 9:05 AM ferry from Horseshoe bay on August 2nd and returning at 8:40 PM on August 5th
