Sailing

Sailing at ClubLocarno is fun and exhilarating. Make new friends and learn an exciting new sport. It's easy and fun to learn how to sail. All it takes is some good instruction in order to get time on the water and to learn good safety practices. Our lessons and refresher clinics are designed to give you the resources and knowledge you need to make smart and safe decisions on the water.

New for 2010 Season: Locarno is now a CYA (Canadian Yachting Association) member school.

Fleet

We have built up an incredible fleet of seaworthy sail boats that are fast and fun and suitable for beginners and advanced sailors. Our fleet line-up is comprised of:

Lasers: If you love to sail single-handed, then this is the perfect boat for you. Easy to sail and to rig. We have the smaller Radial sails for sailing in stronger winds. The fleet consists of five Race Rigged Lasers all ready for your participation in the Jericho racing series held on Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons.

Vanguard 15s: The Vanguard 15 is a two person monohull sailboat. In fact, the V-15 is lighter, tougher and more fun than any other boat in its class. The V-15 delivers speed in a straight forward, durable, lightweight package for sailors of all skill levels.

Tasars: Tasar racing is growing in popularity. We have 4 solid, race ready Tasars in our fleet.

RS500: This boat was purchased new last season. It includes a Spinnaker and single trapeze for the crew. For members who want the challenge and thrill of zooming downwind on a monohull, look no further than the RS500!

Nacra 500s: If you love sailing Catamarans, you will enjoy the ease and safe handling of the Nacra 500. Fun, safe and easy to sail for members that have taken lessons on the Vanguards or Lasers.

Nacra 570: If you are confident and comfortable sailing the Nacra 500, then you may want to apply your sailing skills to the Nacra 570. This boat simply has more power and speed than the Nacra 500.

Nacra F18: Designed to the Formula 18 Rule, the Nacra F18 Infusion is a production boat in a development class. Its wave-piercing hulls are canted outboard 4 degrees, and flatter sections aft are designed to promote planing. The hulls are built with infusion technology, making them stiffer and lighter than those built using conventional layup process. The rig setup features a wing mast with a fat-head main, a self-tacking jib, and a high-aspect asymmetric spinnaker.

Nacra 580: A unique center board class catamaran. This sport catamaran is the ultimate hybrid between a racing and recreational catamaran. With it’s kick up centerboards and volumed hulls is high speed performance and fun guaranteed. It is also possible to fit out the 580 with an a asymmetrical spinnaker kit for even more downwind performance.

Hobie Tiger: A high performance import from Hobie U.S.A.'s Sister company, Hobie Cat Europe. The Hobie Tiger has become one of the most exciting and fastest growing catamaran one-design racing fleets in the world. The Tiger is raced with a crew of two and a spinnaker for down-wind performance. Designed to conform to Formula 18 racing rules, the Hobie Tiger is an ISAF recognized class. It's fittings, hull design and sail shape are the results of the latest developments in sailing technology.

Sailing Lessons

Beginner Lessons. Beginner lessons consist of 30 hours of instruction (about 9 hours on land and 21 hours on the water) and follow the CYA White Sail 1, 2, and 3 curriculum. This course is designed to take you from beginner to where you are confident in taking out our 2-person Vanguards. These lessons will also introduce you to our single-person Lasers. Maximum class size is 6 students.

Intermediate Lessons. The intermediate lessons are 30 hours in length and covers both the CYA Bronze 4 achievement as well as an introduction to racing. Sailors are introduced to advanced sailing techniques, including sail trim, boat tuning, and basic racing skills. After completing the bronze standards, sailors are competent in winds up to 25 km/hr. The 30 hour intermediate course is $200.00. It's best to pay for these when you join the club (or by a cheque deposited in the main clubroom's drop box, greater than 10 days before the lessons). Without advance payment, your spot will not be confirmed, and you may be bumped from a spot in order to make way for other paid members.

One or more lessons are listed below. You can click on a lesson's "Show" link to see more about it, including session dates and how many spots are left.

Free Sailing Clinics

Members of the Sailing Fleet are eligible to take part in various free clinics. This year the clinics for the Sailing Fleet will be held in a different format. Clinics will have three components:

Part 1: Club Room orientation

Part 2: Rigging Session

Part 3: Capsize Session.

These clinics are not fleet specific and experienced club members will be available for each type of boat (Laser, Taser, Catamaran & RS500) during the rigging & capsize session. Parts one and two of the clinics will be held consecutively during the same evening. No sign up is required.

Part three of the clinic will be held on Saturday mornings. Sign up for part 3 is required and can be done by signing up on the form below. Then show up on the Saturday you have reseved and there will be an experienced sailor to assist you with the capsize drill for each boat type (Laser, Taser, Catamaran & RS500). You don't need to be there all morning - just come to the beach between 9 am and 12 pm, do your capsize session and you are ready to go sailing.

Dates:

Clubroom Orientation & Rigging: Every Thursday for eight weeks starting May 6th and ending June 24th; time: 6pm

Capsize session: Every Saturday for eight weeks starting May 8th and ending June 26th; time: 9 am - 1 pm

Click on the table's "Show" link to see the present list of clinics, their dates, and other info, and to signup right here online. If you do signup, we ask that you make a note of it on your calendar, and show up!
