    Intermediate sailing lessons cover CANSAIL Levels 3, and consist of 30 hours of instruction over three consecutive weeks as follows:

    • Monday evenings: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm (3 hrs)
    • Wednesday evenings: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm (3 hrs
    • Saturday afternoons: 2pm - 6pm (4 hrs)
    Note that the last Saturday session has been moved beyond the long weekend.

    Your instructor will be a CANSAIL-certified instructor.

    Most of your sailing will be done on Tasars or Lasers, and the focus will be on enhancing your skills, sailing fast and racing.

    CANSAIL Levels 1 and 2 or equivalent is a prerequisite i.e. you should be a pretty confident dinghy sailor.

    Beginner cat lessons consist of 15 hours of instruction over two consecutive weeks as follows

    • Saturday afternoons: 1:30 pm - 5 pm (3.5 hrs)
    • Sunday afternoons: 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm (4 hrs)

    Your instructor will be a CanSail certified instructor, and you will be sailing the Nacra 500 fleet.

    To take this course, you must have CANSail 4, CYA Bronze or equivalent experience.  We recommend 100 hours of monohull experience and 20 hours crew on catamaran.

    Attendance at a Dryland Clinic for Cats is not a prerequisite, but is strongly encouraged.

                    Introduction to Rowing Lessons. 

    These lessons are for people who are new to the sport. It is open to non-members.  Eight hours of instruction will get you to the point where you can safely launch, land, and row on your own.

    Four two hour classes.

    Meet at the Club Locarno rowing shed which is located at the East end of the Jericho compound (near the Windsure hut).

    Bring a wetsuit for the second lesson. You will need to perform a self-rescue in the ocean in the second lesson. (Don't be nervous... everyone can do it!)

    This session is open to anyone who is cleared(checked out) to use the kayak fleet.

    Some time on the water(not suitable for kayak beginners) will improve your chances of success, as will a good sense of balance ...
    Please dress for immersion (wetsuit or drysuit) - everyone swims!

    This clinic include Part 1 and Part 2 of the checkout.  It is for experienced sailors who want to be cleared to use a new fleet; it is also a great refresher.  For those who are doing their first checkout, it will also include an orientation to the sailing fleet and club room.  Participants can rig two different craft in this session - please indicate your preferences when you register, and we will do our best to schedule volunteer leaders with the relevant experience.

    You will also require an On-water checkout (Part 3); this is a separate registration.  The next clinic is scheduled for June 30.  Details of our checkout clinics can be found here

    Prerequisites

    All checkout participants must know how to sail and preferably have experience on or a similar boat to the one they are checking out on.

Only members who have completed an official SUP checkout will have access to SUPs.

    Please come 10 minutes early ready to go with wet suit/swim gear on! Checkout starts on time. Be prepared to have fun and get wet - everyone must complete a mandatory self-rescue :)

    Our windsurfing trip plan includes several planning/prep sessions leading up to the trip and for wrapping-up.

    A nominal Club Trip Fee is required for all members who will be using club gear on the trip, but is waived for TWO (2) volunteer trip co-leaders and for those who already have a High Wind Pass.  Contact the Director (windsurfing@clublocarno.com) to be a trip leader.

    In any case, whether you need to use club gear (or not), please register so there's a sense of how many members will be in the trip.

    Please register for the trip based on the type of club's windsurfing boards you believe you need for the trip. Registration is limited based on the number and type of boards that are approved for use on the trip. There are also registration types for members who own their your own gear / planning to rent gear on-site (e.g., at Hood River's retail/rental shops), and for members who are not planing to windsurf.  Guests can accompany members on trips but cannot use club gear.

    The on water capsize and competency demonstration.  Experienced club members will be on hand to review capsize procedures, to assess your competency in launching, landing, on-water handling, and capsize recovery. 

    Prerequisite:
    Sailing Orientation & Rigging Clinic (Part 1 & 2) for the same vessels.

    Registration closes 48 hours before the clinic.  The clinic will be cancelled if no one has registered by that time.

    All new members of the kayak fleet are required to take a lesson, or demonstrate their existing skills in a Kayak Checkout, before they can sign out club boats.

    This checkout is for experienced paddlers who can demonstrate a competent solo recovery with a paddle float, and recovery of another kayaker (T-rescue is the recommended technique.)

    Existing fleet members may also take this as a refresher course.

    Please bring immersion gear (wetsuit or drysuit), wind breaker jacket, hat and a warm drink.  All other gear will be provided.

    Please register as space is limited, and so we can email you more details.

    Our 8 hour introductory course is $80.00, and consists of two 4 hours sessions. 

    We will give both on land and on water instruction using our club windsurfing gear.

    Skills taught include understanding the wind (points of sail), how to launch and land safely. Basic maneuvers (tack) and self rescue. You will also be taught the correct use of our equipment  (the Locarno Way) including our check out procedure and how to safely carry, clean and store the boards and sails.

    Successful completion of this course will grant the new member use of our Level 1 Equipment.

    You are required to provide your own Wetsuit, or you can rent a wetsuit at the Jericho Sailing Centre.

    Advanced Rowing Lessons

    Now that you're comfortable on the water, it's time to work on that technique!

    The emphasis of these lessons is to improve your rowing technique and to become familiar with the more advanced rowing shells in the Locarno Fleet.
    These lessons are all about you, so bring your questions and ideas to the session. 

    Participants must have completed Rowing Level One or be able to demonstrate equivalents skills. 
    Recommended for rowers with 30 hours or more of experience, and with the physical ability to row over 5kms, and continuously for 45 minutes.

Then you will be asked to demonstrate your ability to launch, sail out, tack and sail your windsurfing board safely back to the beach. You will also be asked to demonstrate a self rescue technique.

    This checkout is mandatory for ALL members wishing to use the windsurfing fleet. This is not a beginner windsurfing lesson. To attend this checkout you are expected to have at least 15 hours windsurfing experience.  Any less experience and we expect you to attend one of our Beginner Windsurfing Lessons.  Successful completion of the checkout or our beginner windsurfing course will qualify you as checked out as a Level 1 windsurfer.

    • a synthetic layer for under the wet suit,
    • rain jacket or wind shell that you don’t mind getting wet, 
    • shoes or booties that you can wear in the water, and
    • a complete change of warm clothes for afterwards.

    Lessons will start on the hour - please arrive a bit early.  We will start on land and have an opportunity to change into wetsuits before we launch.

    This is a classic, and stunningly beautiful, overnight trip in Howe Sound.

    We will launch at Porteau Cove on the Saturday morning, and paddle across to a stunning (and usually quiet) campsite on Gambier, via Anvil.  On Sunday morning we will launch early-ish to beat the thermal winds, and if weather allows, explore the coast of Anvil Island before returning to Porteau Cove. (Approx. 15km each day.)

    We plan to meet at JSCA in the members' lounge on Wednesday evening (July 18th) to confirm logistics.

    Pre-requisites: Checked out for kayak fleet, moderate fitness,  comfortable in a moderate wind (10-15kn), practiced rescues in the past 12 months.

    Rigging & Transport

    This clinic is associated with the upcoming club windsurfing trip, which typically involve 5 to 7 hours of travel each way, and several nights camping.

    For club members who are not planning to attend the club trip but still want to learn about rigging and transport of windsurfing equipment, come and join this clinic and learn in a group setting.  There will be opportunities to practice, compare, and get feedback.

    The magic of this trip is that no cars are required!

    We will paddle right out of the Jericho compound to Bowen island, where we will base camp for 2 nights.  On the second day we can explore the coast and possibly paddle up to Gambier.

    This trip is labelled Level III because of the open crossing with exposure to wind.  We will paddle approximately 15-20km per day at around 5-6km per hour.

    Pre-requisites: Checked out for kayak fleet, moderate fitness,  comfortable in a moderate wind (10-15kn), practiced rescues in the past 12 months.

    This clinic is associated with the Windsurfing Trip 3 - BC Day long weekend trip to Squamish (Fri to Sun, 3 days, 2 nights). 

    For club members who cannot attend the full club trip but still want to learn to waterstart, there will be a few extra spots that these members can register for.
